DAMA encourages its members to be aware of standards and apply them to all activities of their enterprises that could benefit from them. Some examples of these standards areas include:
- Metadata and metadata registries. Descriptions based on standards are necessary for meaningful data interchange.
- Terminology. Standards establishing an international consensus on terminology to assist technology transfer.
- Interchange formats.
- Standards for measurements, quantities and units.
- Value domain standards for geographic units and other domains.
- Consensus and Community of Interest standards derived from International standards.
This page will contain a growing list of resources available to assist you in accomplishing this goal.
Standards-related Concept Maps:
- International Standards Relationships
This system of Concept Maps and associated text documents describes a selected set of standards and shows their interrelationships. DAMA members are welcome to use this work as a resource. Contributions and feedback are welcome.
- Metadata Registry Model
These Concept Maps model a 11179-based Metadata Registry implementation, the United States Health Information Knowledgebase (USHIK). The USHIK comprises a collection of standards described in a common format to assist users in navigating through the many standards addressing health care data.
ISO Publicly Available Standards
The list of ISO Publicly Available Standards lists Standards and Technical Reports that are exceptions to the rule that most such standards must be purchased. These are available to download free of charge.
Get Involved With Standards!
From Judith Newton, DAMA-I VP for DM Standards
Most DAMA members are aware of the standards relevant to our profession: database standards such as SQL, the ISO Metadata Registry Standard, XML and its many schema specializations and applications (MatML, NIEM) are just a few. Only a few of us participate directly in standards development – many from lack of access, some because they feel that you must be among the very best experts in an area to contribute.
As the Vice-President for Data Management Standards for DAMA International, I would like to allow more of our members to participate in the standards development process. I feel that we have a reservoir of talent and ideas in DAMA Chapters that can contribute to many standards efforts. There are two ways that we can work towards this end:
- First, I would like to build a list of DAMA members already involved in formal standards development efforts sponsored by ANSI, ISO, IEEE, OMG, and other SDO’s and consortia pertaining to data resource management. This will not only help us identify the expertise available within DAMA but also a complete picture of all the standards that pertain to DRM.
- Second, any DAMA member who is not currently involved in a formal standards development effort but who has interest, suggestions, or other contributions to make to building DAMA’s collective understanding of DRM standards, is welcome to make suggestions. These will be passed on to the relevant standards participants. Use the contact link from the website: VP_DM_Standards@DAMA.ORG to do this.
I would also invite everyone interested in building a complete picture of DRM-related standards to visit the CMAPS system of standards descriptions: "International Standards Relationships" viewable from the DAMA-I website (click on Education and Research/Data Standards from the homepage) and suggest additions and extensions based on their own standards interests. These will be added as time and resources allow.
